Psalm 90

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.” 4 A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. 5 Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death—they are like the new grass of the morning: 6 In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. 7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. 10 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11 If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. 12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. 13 Relent, LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. 16 May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. 17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.

Alrighty then, now this Psalm I like. I love the way he acknowledges God as almighty, all powerful, all knowing and all consuming. I love that he asks God to “teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom”. We all go round and round in circles, and it’s always about me, me, me and before we know it, we are old and looking back at what we’ve done with our lives. I always pray and ask God to give me His eyes so that I may see the worry, hurt and pain people are really feeling. Sometimes we take for granted how precious life is and how quickly it slips through our fingers. I work as a paralegal and the firm I work at specializes in medical malpractice (we sue hospitals and doctors). The sad part is that most of my clients are dead or dying and no amount of money will ever bring back what they have lost. It might bring some closure, but life is priceless. We need to ask for wisdom so that we don’t waste the days that God has given us and so that EVERYTHING that we do, we do to glorify him and his kingdom. All we do is complain: I’m tired, I’m hungry, I have homework, I have to wake up at what time to be at church, I have to say hello that that person, I don’t like what my mom cooked, I don’t want to go to sleep yet, what do you mean I can’t text anymore…and I can go on for the next couple of hours…seriously, we have to look around us and start complaining less and start doing something for someone else. It’s the best feeling in the world to know that you’ve been able to make a difference in someone’s life (some of you guys experienced it at His House last weekend). My 8-year old son still prays every night for Sandro, a 5-year old homeless boy he met last year at the family shelter in downtown Miami. He always asks God that Sandro make the wise choice and that he will provide for him so that he doesn’t have to return to the shelter. The Psalm ends perfectly “establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands. Open your eyes and look around, there is lots of work to be done in Miami, we live in the second un-churched city in the country…
